In December 2009, Jamie traded cows for carrots and joined the staff of the Bakersfield Californian. When she's not wrangling online blogs and comments, Jamie is raising her young son, inevitably playing fetch with her dogs, working on completing her master's degree, wishing she had time to run a fourth marathon, and searching for Mr. Right.

"I just happened to be in the right place at the right time"
"And you know how to take good photos."
"Um, not really. I just snapped it with my phone."
"But you have a journalism degree."
"Yeah, but they didn't teach us how to use our camera phone in J school. Anyone can take a picture."

Yes, ANYONE can take a picture. I know you take them of your kids, and pets. I know I'm not the ony one who does that.
On Wednesday afternoon I happened to be driving across town near Coffee Rd. and Rosedale Hwy. (with three kids in the backseat) when we saw the explosion at the Alon Refinery. Like a dozen other motorists, I pulled over on the east side of Coffee and watched. And like everyone else, I took photos with my phone -- a 2-year-old iPhone 3Gs.
The kids asked questions, and we watched as we could see the fire crews arriving. In a matter of about 60 seconds, I emailed the photo from my phone to the editors here at the Californian, with the following information: "Shot this on Coffee Rd."
They used the photo in the breaking news alert that went online, and with the final version of the story, too.
So now it's your turn. We can't be everywhere at once.
Have you snapped a photo with your phone of a news event or something happening around town? Send it to mobile@bakersfield.com. That email gets to a few of us and we'll be sure to get it where it needs to go. We can't promise it will be used online or in the paper, but if it doesn't include a thumb in the frame, there's a good chance it will appear somewhere, even on our Facebook page.
That email address again is mobile@bakersfield.com. Be sure to include your first and last name, and brief details (what, where, and approximately when).
Make a note: mobile@bakersfield.com.
No fancy equipment needed, just photos from YOU, our readers.
