Q: Why is the California Highway Patrol arranging construction of a new facility at the southwest corner of Highway 99 and Taft Highway when it has a station in Lebec, at Stockdale Highway and Interstate 5 and on Buck Owens Boulevard?

A: The CHP has outgrown its offices on Buck Owens Boulevard and so is relocating its folks from there to the new facility on Highway 99 and Taft Highway, according to agency spokeswoman Jaime Coffee in Sacramento. The existing building, which the CHP owns, was designed for 85 employees but now holds about 155, she said.

The CHP will lease the future building at Highway 99 and Taft Highway, which is cheaper, Coffee said. The Buck Owens Boulevard facility will be declared surplus and offered to other state agencies first, other local governments secondarily and then sold if no other deals are struck.

The CHP also has offices in Buttonwillow, Fort Tejon and Mojave, Coffee said. She said those will remain open.
