Toby Keith, who sang with Merle Haggard at one of the country legend’s final concerts, will perform a tribute in celebration of his friend and musical hero Sunday on Fox.

"He's the biggest ever,“ Keith told the Associated Press in an interview. ”He never did stray off the beaten path. He stayed exactly with what he did. He never quit writing the same style of songs.

"He was my idol."

The American Country Countdown Awards at the Forum in Inglewood will pair Keith with Hag’s band the Strangers, including the icon’s youngest son, Ben. Haggard’s widow, Teresa, is expected to attend. Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey will introduce the tribute.

The show airs from 8 to 10 p.m. on Fox.
