A good number of teams from Bakersfield headed to bowl the California United States Bowling Congress Open Championships in Stockton this past weekend.
Former PBA player, Don Snow and Julian A. Martinez, bowling not on the same team but next to each other on the lanes, both rolled 300 games, the same game, competing in the doubles competition June 6 at West Lane Bowl. This is the first time Snow has rolled a 300 competing in State. He was competing with partner Zack Newman. Snow's previous career accomplishment in State competition was a victory in the scratch Team event in Bakersfield in 2004.
Julian A. Martinez is the son of JP and Rita Martinez of Bakersfield and he was teamed up with Gilbert Alaniz, also of Bakersfield. This was the first time Martinez rolled a 300 in State.
The Bakersfield doubles team of Ian Byers and Phil Cook is currently in first place on the scratch ddoubles ladder with a 1420+ score. They also competed this past weekend.
BAKERSFIELD YOUTH TRAVELING TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS
The saying "be careful what you wish for," came to be for Youth Traveling Tournament Director Anthony Rose for the May event! The event was scheduled months ago for Sunday, May 10, which at the time didn't mean much to Rose until it drew nearer and he realized it was Mother's Day. And, the event is called a Traveling Tournament because it moves from center to center to give participants a chance to bowl on different lane conditions and a different environment. This event was scheduled to take place at AMF Westchester Bowl. So the night before at the GEUSBC Awards Banquet, Rose was stressing out about the tournament, hoping he would have a good turnout.
Rose has been working hard to publicize the event to outlying areas of Bakersfield and has really been focusing on Visalia and Fresno. Was he ever surprised when a van pulled up that morning of May 10 to AMF Westchester Lanes and, what he thought would be a couple bowlers turned out to be close to 30.
The results were as follows:
Champion - Ryan Peden, Cedar Lanes, Fresno (1978) $200 scholarship
2nd place - TJ Langhardt, AMF Southwest Lanes, Bakersfield (1967) $100 scholarship
3rd place - Adrian Oceguera, Fresno State (1960) $75 scholarship
4th place - Gary Smith, AMF Southwest Lanes, Bakersfield (1937) $65 scholarship
5th place - Amanda Welsh, Cedar Lanes, Fresno (1912) $50 scholarship
High game of the day was rolled by Adrian Oceguera (258). High scratch series went to Amanda Welsh (671); and high handicap series went to Brandon Trudel of Bakersfield (681). High average of the day belonged to the Champion, Ryan Peden (203).
Special Note: Anthony Rose was presented the inaugural Don Glover Youth Sportsmanship Award at the GEUSBC Awards Banquet on May 9. Rose received this special recognition award because of his outstanding qualities in not only running the Bakersfield Youth Traveling Tournaments but also because of his involvement in local youth bowling and leadership abilities. Rose was recently accepted at the University of Las Vegas where he will start this August.
Upcoming Bakersfield Youth Traveling Tournaments:
July 12 - Tournament of Champions (Invitation only), 11am, AMF Southwest Lanes
July 26 - Invitational (Invitation only), 11am, Regency Lanes
