Swenson comes to work at 6 a.m. to update The Californian's Web page with any news that occurred since the night before. He then incites people to participate in weblog discussions on issues of the day.

Swenson, a 1971 journalism graduate from San Jose State University, has been a reporter for 34 years. He's covered practically every type of local news, including more than 20 years at The Californian writing about crime, gore, human misery, tragedy and smut.

Most recently he covered agriculture and water. He has worked for newspapers in San Luis Obispo, Oakland, Pleasanton, Fairfield, San Rafael and Fremont. His adult daughter lives in Phoenix and his adult son lives in Merced. He still plays softball and is an avid golfer, backpacker, camper and fisherman. He is the union president at the newspaper, the director of the Christian Softball League and the newsroom coffee czar.
