Sonny Fernandez

Congratulations and happy 20th Birthday Sonny Fernandez (LCPL. Odrano G. Fernandez II)
As a young boy, Sonny had an interest in military life. He admired his cousin Sgt. Danny Cardenas and god father 1st Serg. Jose Valdina.
After the events of “911” occurred, Sonny went on a 5th grade field trip and was one of the few students to lay the wreath for the “Unknown Solider” ceremony at Arlington Cemetery. The field trip also included a visit to ground zero where he knew it was his calling to serve our country.
On December 8, 2008, Sonny left during the Holidays for boot camp to join the United States Marine Corps. Three months later he graduated as platoon honor man (leatherneck award) and was just short of 1.7 points to receive Company honor man. While training in Missouri for military police he received the Corporal Matthew V. Dillon “Gung Ho” leadership award. Now stationed in Twenty-Nine Palms, his strive for giving it his best has continued him to be Marine of the Month for November, 2009, March 2010, and also “Marine of the Quarter”. Wow!
I’d like to thank all of you who have been an inspiration in my son’s life. From all the family and friends (Bakersfield Play Center, OLPH, Bill L. Williams, Freedom Middle School, Liberty High School, AYSO # 359 & Dewar’s Candy Shop) and all of our patrons from El Sombrero Restaurant.
Please continue to keep Sonny in your prayers: Christ the King Catholic Church, Valley Bible Fellowship, Valley Baptist Church, Brimhall Road Assembly of God.
God bless you on your journey Sonny.
Love you, Proud marine Mom, Minnie Gonzalez medina, Daniel, Vanessa, and Mariah
