Seven more high school football coaches joined the BVarsity Live season-opening Super Show on Friday in the Dignity Health Studios at The Californian. Videos of all of those interviews are available online at Bakotube.com. Here is a sampling of what five of the coaches had to say:
"I don't think we're as strong as far as the number of kids coming back, but I think we have some guys that can step up."
"Running the ball, we feel like there are less things that can happen against you. But definitely, you want to try to be a little balanced. But if you have the luxury to run the ball, there's nothing better than to run the ball down somebodies throat."
Edgar Mares, Arvin
"It's an honor to be put in (the South Yosemite League). For us, it's been a focal point.. We are going to have to play."
"We are trying to set an expectation of competing every week. I tell (the players), 'If you can do that, everything else is going to fall in line.'"
Erich Smith, Golden Valley
"We recommitted ourselves to the weight room and really getting the kids to buy in right now. I'm trying to generate that team spirit."
"Our quote has been, 'teach through adversity.' So when we run into bumps or kids are having a hard time, the yelling and screaming takes a back seat and lets us teach them in that moment so in a year from then, they'll know how to respond."
Jason Oliver, Foothill
"(The South Yosemite League) is probably a better fit because we were a Division III school playing a Division I schedule."
"I think we are right about where we want to be. A consistent program. We are winning consistently when we play with similar schools. That was one of the goals we had was to be competitive."
Sean McKeown, Independence
"As far as a group, we are pretty strong and we've developed that familyhood and brotherhood. We are banking on that right now."
"We are similar to Arvin where our kids go out all summer and work in over 100 degree heat then they come to practice and they're tired. But they are fighting through."
Ricky Ishida, Shafter
