Liberty High will host the 2014 Kern County Youth Track and Field Championships today starting at 8:30 a.m. Field events start at 9 a.m. and end around 3 p.m.

The top eight athletes from elementary and junior high schools from around Kern County will compete in shorter races, while the top 12 will compete in distance races and field events.

Athletes must finish in the top four in their events to qualify for advancement to compete against athletes from Fresno, Madera, Kings, Tulare and Merced counties at the Valley Track and Field Championships at ClovisBuchanan High on May 17.

Athletes will be sorted into four categories as followed by the Youth Athletics format of USA Track and Field: Bantams (born in 2004-2005), Midgets (born 2002-2003), Youth (born in 2000-2001) and Intermediates (born in 1998-1999).
