Cleveland. Connecticut. Camp.

That was the itinerary for one of the busiest, most nerve-racking weeks of Derek Carr's life, but he left no doubt Saturday at the first Carr Elite football camp at Bakersfield Christian where his priorities lay.

"Hey, we worked the schedule around the camp," said Carr, a BCHS graduate who figures to be taken in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday. "We wanted to be here for the kids. We had some things come up, and we had to say no."

Carr met with the Cleveland Browns, who own the fourth and 26th pick in the first round, earlier in the week, and he spent Friday in Bristol, Conn., doing multiple interviews for ESPN. He flew back to Fresno and arrived at 2 a.m. Saturday morning before driving to Bakersfield in the morning.

More than a hundred youth football players age 9 through high school came to the camp, which delivered professional level training from Carr and his older brother David, the top pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. Also instructing were Carr Elite trainer Eric Mahanke, a former Fresno State wide receiver; USC quarterback and Centennial graduate Cody Kessler; Liberty football coach Bryan Nixon; and former Stockdale coach Dave Lonsinger.

"We've got a great group, a great staff, people that just work their tails off," David Carr said. "It makes our job easier. We just have to show up and coach football, and we've been doing that since we were little. We want to help these kids, no matter what they choose to do."
