Stockdale senior Blake Haney won the prestigious 3,200-meter invitational race Saturday night at the Arcadia Invitational, clocking a personal-best 8:46.80 to best a field in which 19 runners ran faster than nine minutes.
Haney, a defending state champion in the 1,600 and 3,200, ran only one race Saturday, and he made it count. He closed with a 58.5-second lap in the final 400 meters to beat second-place Andrew Rafla of Timberline (Idaho) by about four seconds in the multi-state meet.
Haney's time in the 3,200 is the best high school time in the nation this season.
Haney's previous personal best in the 3,200 came in placing third at last year's Arcadia Invitational in 8:48.58.
Two other returning state medalists from Kern County had good nights, too. Bakersfield senior Scotty Newton finished second in the boys triple jump with a season best 49-1, and he was third in the long jump at 23-6. Liberty junior Morganne Hill was fifth in the invitational girls 300 hurdles in a 42.56 and fifth in the seeded 100 hurdles in a wind-aided 14.00.
Other locals with top-10 finishes: Frontier senior Colton Foster, fifth in the boys shot put (58-2.25); Frontier's Gabriel Gaeta, fifth in the seeded boys 300 hurdles (38.83, a personal best); Centennial's Isaac Trevino, third in the open boys 800 (1:54.25); Liberty's Rae Blansett, sixth in the girls discus (146-0); and Stockdale senior Asia Chesley, ninth in the girls high jump (5-4).
