Player of the Year

Gonzalo Rolon, Bakersfield

Senior, midfielder

A playmaking maestro, Rolon scored eight of his 20 goals in the Southwest Yosemite League, leading the Drillers to a 10-0 mark. A former member of the U.S. under-16 team, Rolon also had 11 assists on the season.

First team

Jesus Barajas, South

Sophomore, defender

Anchored a Rebels defense that won four road games in the Central Section Division III playoffs, allowing just three goals in the process. He also scored eight goals, including a penalty kick in the section final at Fresno to break a late 1-1 tie.

Christian Canales, Wasco

Junior, midfielder

He scored or assisted on more than 70 percent of the goals scored by the South Sequoia League champion Tigers, finishing with 21 goals and 3 assists. Those totals came even though he spent the first 10 games of the season at defender.

Colby Evans, Bakersfield

Junior, midfielder

Another midfield magician for the Drillers, Evans scored seven goals and had two assists but often created the possession that allowed BHS to have so many offensive chances.

Marshall Garcia,West

Senior, midfielder

A three-year starter and first-team all-SYL pick, Garcia scored three goals and had seven assists for a Vikings team that unseated traditional power Golden Valley atop the SYL. Garcia has signed with Cal State Bakersfield.

Jose Gonzalez, East

Senior, forward

"Chema" scored 25 goals to lead Kern County and included three hat tricks. The Southeast Yosemite League Offensive Player of the Year helped the Blades share the league title with Highland.

Rudy Hernandez, Golden Valley

Senior, midfielder

Hernandez was so versatile that he scored 10 goals and had 14 assists -- and was named the SYL's Defensive Player of the Year.

Erik Jauregui, Wasco

Junior, defender

The last man on a lockdown defense that only allowed 27 goals in 28 games. Jauergui was credited with 44 steals, but his best defending was done with positioning and clearances that never let the opposition get close.

Calvin Laverty, Liberty

Senior, defender

Stout defender and first-team all-Southwest Yosemite League selection helped lead the Patriots to a 7-2-1 mark and a second-place finish in league play.

David Martinez, Independence

Senior, defender

It says a lot about Martinez that he was voted the Southwest Yosemite League Defensive Player of the Year for a 4-6 team in a league full of good defenders.

Aldo Portugal, West

Senior, defender

He usually locked down the opposing team's best player, but perhaps Portugal's value is best summed like this: The Vikings were 15-2-3 when he played, 0-2 when he didn't.

Jorge Reyes, Bakersfield

Senior, forward

Co-MVP of the Southwest Yosemite League, Reyes scored 17 goals and had 21 assists for the best offensive team in the area. In 10 league games, he had nine goals and 10 assists.

Denis Rivas, South

Sophomore, forward

Offensive Player of the Year in the SYL scored 11 goals, assisted on nine others and generally caused havoc in a defense-centric league, then helped South on its magical playoff run.

Noah Stewart, Frontier

Senior, goalkeeper

The Titans' last line of defense was a standout from the start of the year to the finish. Was honored as Goalkeeper of the Year in the SWYL.

Tyler Walsh, Stockdale

Senior, midfielder

A unanimous first-team all-SWYL selection, Walsh had good timing with his 5 goals and 6 assists -- one of the goals was a game-winner, and two of the assists came on game-winners.
