RIVERSIDE -- Cal State Bakersfield had an 8-0 lead after batting in the third inning but lost 15-10 to UC Riverside, the Roadrunners' eighth straight softball loss.

Karissa Veiga's bases-loaded triple in the second inning keyed a four-run inning and CSUB (2-11) added four more in the third for its eight-run lead. Ridgeview High graduate Jessica Castaneda, a sophomore, had two hits, three RBIs and scored three runs. She hit a two-run home run in the sixth.

Sydney Raeber and Ashley Carter added two hits each for CSUB.

Riverside (5-7) took the lead by scoring five runs in the third and six in the fourth.

IRVINE -- Cal State Bakersfield lost two water polo matches at the UC Irvine Invitational, 21-1 against No. 1-ranked USC and 13-5 to No. 8 Loyola Marymount.

Caitlyn Hill scored Bakersfield's only goal vs. USC. Loyola Marymount broke open a close match with six goals in the third period.

Niki De Leon had three goals for CSUB (5-11) against the Lions.

JC baseball

MERCED -- Merced College broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to beat Taft College 7-3 in a Central Valley Conference baseball game.

The Cougars (4-8, 0-2 CVC) trailed 2-0 before tying it in the sixth when Roman Tetatani singled, Chris Hopballe walked and after a groundout moved the runners up, Matt Moorehead had a two-run single.

Taft added a run in the ninth on a walk, passed ball and Travis Tessandori's two-out RBI single.

JC men's basketball

LANCASTER -- Bakersfield College ended its season with an 83-70 loss at Antelope Valley College.

The Renegades finish 13-14 overall and went 3-9 in the Western State Conference South Division.

Antelope Valley is 26-4 and 11-1.

Corey Mitchell scored 30 points and have seven rebounds for BC and Van Holloway added 11 points.

JC women's basketball

LANCASTER-- Nakia Page led Bakersfield College with 22 points and 13 rebounds but the Renegades fell in their season finale at Antelope Valley College 63-60.

Leigha Moland pitched in 17 points for the Renegades (12-14, 6-6 Western State Conference) and Claesey Tarver finished with 13.

JC softball

Bakersfield College split a pair of games at home, falling to Mount San Antonio College 11-0 before defeating Moorpark College 12-9.

Pitcher Brooke Quiddam was roughed up in the first game, only pitching 1-2/3 innings against the Mounties, but got the complete game victory over the Raiders.

The Renegades managed just two hits against Mount San Antonio but caught fire against Moorpark for 14 hits including a 3-4 performance at the plate by Quiddam.

Bakersfield (3-6) will host Southwestern College at 9 a.m. and Cypress College at 6 p.m. today.
