Cal Hi Sports named Garces catcher Jake Sweaney to the first team of its All-State Baseball Team last week, the latest honor for the Rams' star, who was a two-time Californian Player of the Year and a fourth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Sweaney batted .489 this year with 14 doubles, eight home runs, 41 runs and 39 RBIs.
Two local players were named to Cal Hi's third-team all-state team: Stockdale senior pitcher/infielder Max Carter and Centennial outfielder Mitchell Haas. Taft senior and Cal State Bakersfield signee Steven Gee was named to the Small Schools All-State team as a pitcher/infielder, and Frontier junior Harrison Smith was a first-team All-Underclass selection.
Haney set to run in Ukraine
Stockdale rising senior Blake Haney will run tonight and early Thursday morning at the IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Haney will run preliminaries for the 3,000 meters at 11:35 tonight (9:35 a.m. Thursday in Ukraine), and then prelims for the 1,500 meters at 2:20 a.m. Thursday (12:20 p.m. in Ukraine). Finals for both events would be early Sunday.
Haney, a double state champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 for Stockdale as a junior, was selected for the U.S. youth team after winning World Youth Trials races in Carbondale, Ill., last month.
Blade QB picked for combine
East High quarterback Blake Sherman was selected as one of 170 football prospects to compete at the Blue-Grey National Super Combine this weekend in Las Vegas.
Sherman was selected based on his performance at a regional event in Ventura this spring.
The Las Vegas combine serves as a qualifier for the Blue-Grey National All-American Game in January in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Summer basketball tourney
Sixteen high school boys basketball teams will compete in the Haddad Dodge Summer Breeze Tournament Friday and Saturday at Bakersfield Christian High School.
Two games will be played simultaneously, starting at 5:15 p.m. Friday.
Admission is $5, or $4 for children 6-13.
5:15 p.m.: Independence vs. Garces B; Stockdale vs. Highland;
6:05: Bakersfield vs. Shafter; West vs. McFarland;
6:55: Kennedy vs. Bakersfield Christian; Paso Robles vs. Delano;
7:45: Ridgeview vs. Arvin; Garces A vs. Liberty.
Second-round matchups, based on first-round results, are scheduled to start at 8:35 and 9:25.
Saturday's games start at 8 a.m., with the third-place game beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the championship at 5.
