Gino Lacava, one of the most successful boys basketball coaches in Central Section history, said Sunday he has stepped down from his post at Garces after 20 years.
Lacava won 10 section championships in various divisions, which is a section record, according to historian Bob Barnett. He ranks fifth in section history with 428 wins, against only 175 losses.
"I kind of stepped back a year or two ago and thought the game had passed me by," Lacava said.
Garces assistant Matt Robles, who has been an increasingly active member of Lacava's staff, is the new head coach. Lacava said he will stay on an as assistant.
The Rams reached the Division II section title game this past season before losing to Hanford West in double overtime. It was Lacava's 13th title-game appearance in 20 years.
"I've never been a wins and losses guy, and I've never been a stats guy," Lacava said. "I couldn't tell you how many wins I have. I have a very different approach to coaching. I teach kids to work hard, teach them to do very few things and teach them to respect teammates and opponents."
