SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Cal State Bakersfield concluded its men's golf season Wednesday by tying for eighth place at the America Sky Conference Championships.
Senior Daniel Richardson was the top Roadrunner individual, tying for 14th with a 4-over-par 220 in the three-day, 54-hole tournament. He shot a 4-over 76 on Wednesday.
CSUB had a team score of 909, which tied Texas-Pan American for eighth in the 12-team event.
Sacramento State's Jordan Weir won the tournament with a 3-under 213. Houston Baptist won the team title with a 7-over 871.
"We didn't finish as strong as I would have hoped in the final round and we stayed in about the same position," said CSUB coach Dave Barber, who has announced his retirement, effective at the end of this season. "All in all it was a good season which showed a lot of improvement toward the end of the year."
Richardson was one of three seniors on this year's squad. The others were Matt Hammons (Highland High), and Patrick Bell from Manchester, England.
Hammons tied for 27th in the tournament with a 230 and Bell was 54th at 243. Both shot 75s Wednesday's for their lowest rounds of the tournament.
Blaze tops Giants
SAN JOSE -- Bakersfield reliever Pat Doyle pitched three shutout innings and the Blaze topped the San Jose Giants, 6-4, at Municipal Stadium.
Marquez Smith hit a solo homer to tie the game, 2-2, in the sixth. Juan Silverio hit a two-run single to break the tie in a four-run eighth for the Blaze..
Doyle came on in relief of Tanner Robles (two runs allowed over four innings) in the fifth, and allowed just one hit and struck out four. He is now 2-0 on the season with a 4.12 ERA.
