Tyrell Corbin, a point guard who is the son of Utah Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Bakersfield's basketball program.
Corbin, a 6-foot tall, 180-pounder, is transferring from Salt Lake (City) Community College, where he helped lead that team to a 29-5 record.
Corbin averaged 10.3 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game his sophomore season.
As a freshman, he played at UC Davis, where he started 23 of the 30 games he played. He averaged 6.3 points and three assists.
"We are excited that Tyrell decided to be part of our basketball family," CSUB coach Rod Barnes said. "He is a pure point guard who is a good floor general with a great feel for the game and a high IQ.
"He's a pass-first point guard who can score when needed."
Tyrone Corbin played for DePaul and had more than 1,000 NBA games over a 15-year career for eight franchises.
"Tyrell has great genes," Barnes said. "His dad was a great college player and spent several seasons in the NBA. It's always nice to sign a coach's son and Tyrell will play an important role on next year's team."
The younger Corbin had an outstanding career at West High School in Salt Lake City, where he was an all-state selection three times and was named "Mr. Basketball" by the Deseret News in 2011.
