COALINGA -- West Hills College scored five runs in the second inning and beat Taft 5-1 in a Central Valley Conference baseball game Tuesday.
Taft pitcher Brandon Van Stone pitched a six-hitter, with five of the hits in the second. Van Stone did not allow a hit over the final 7-2/3 innings and West Hills (14-11, 8-5 CVC) had only one baserunner in that time, who reached on an error.
Taft (7-17-1, 4-9) scored in the second when Michael Vaquera singled and eventually scored on Luis Trinidad's RBI single.
BC beaten in softball by LA Valley
VAN NUYS -- Bakersfield College softball was beaten 9-1 by Los Angeles Valley in a game shortened to five innings because of the eight-run rule.
The Renegades (3-22 overall, 2-8 Western State Conference Blue Division) had three hits that came consecutively in the fourth: a leadoff double by Katie Hoffman, a single by Kelsey Best and an RBI single by Kassidi Ward.
CSUB swept in sand volleyball
LONG BEACH -- Second-ranked Long Beach State handed the Cal State Bakersfield sand volleyball team a 5-0 loss, and the Roadrunners also lost 3-2 to Loyola Marymount.
CSUB (3-4) got wins vs. Loyola Marymount in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Mariah Alvidrez and Shayna Guitare posted a 21-14, 21-18 win and the team of Lisa Bartsch and Molly O'Hagan won 21-16, 21-12.
