LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- New Mexico State snapped Cal State Bakersfield's nine-game women's basketball winning streak Saturday with a 87-81 win, the 600th victory in the NMSU program's history.

CSUB (11-16) was led by Janae Coffee's 21 points and 20 points by Tyonna Outland.

New Mexico State improved to 12-14.

It was CSUB's first loss in six games this season against future Western Athletic Conference opponents.

VALLEY GLEN -- Justin Kelly pitched into the ninth and Bakersfield College pulled away for an 8-2 victory at L.A. Valley in Western State Conference South play.

Nick Sakowski had two hits, including a two-run double in the ninth, and Erik Williams, Luc Pomales and Rolando Martinez had a pair of hits for the Renegades (10-2, 3-1). Kelly (2-1) finished with six strikeouts.

Taft College fell to 0-3 in Central Valley Conference play with a 13-2 loss at College of the Sequoias.

CULVER CITY-- Bakersfield College had strong showings by members of both men's and women's teams at the Western State Conference Relays at West L.A. College.

Both 4x200 relay teams took first, with the men (Justin Evans, Walter Hunt, Michael Norwood, Sterling Fuggett) finishing in 1:29.95 and the women (Nicole Lewis, Natalie O'Dyer, Jade Gridiron, Reshanna Watson) finishing in 1:48.11.

Other winners for the women were Tejera Dial in the triple jump (33-63/4) and Alacia Torres in the shot put (40-31/4).

The BC men had third-place finishes by Richard Langdeaux in the 3,000 meters (9:06.16) and Evan Eggenberg in the high jump (6-4).

JC women's basketball

The Renegades rolled to a 73-54 victory over West L.A. to highlight Sophomore Day at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.

After honoring sophomores Brittany Smith, Andrea Harris, Christina Soto, Emilee Parks and Haley Huntington before tip-off, BC scored the game's first six points on 3-pointers by Huntington and Parks.

The Renegades (14-13, 7-5 Western State Conference South) built a 14-point lead midway through the first half only to see their lead shrink to four points by West L.A. (15-12, 5-7) by halftime.

Parks made 3-of-6 3-pointers and finished with with 15 points, while Huntington added 14 points and five rebounds.

CSUB water polo

NEWPORT BEACH -- Cal State Bakersfield's water polo team lost 12-4 to No. 1-ranked Stanford and lost 14-5 to No. 9-ranked San Jose State on Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational.

Nicola Barrett had a goal vs. Stanford and two vs. San Jose State.

Blue Jays trade Charles

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Philadelphia Phillies traded reliever Michael Schwimer to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league first baseman Art Charles.

Charles, a former standout at Ridgeview High and Bakersfield College, was a 20th-round draft choice by Toronto in 2010.

He had a combined 13 home runs, 34 RBIs and hit .235 in 66 games at rookie-league Bluefield (W.Va.) and Class-A Vancouver last year.

The 27-year-old Schwimer was 2-1 with a 4.46 ERA in 35 games for the Phillies last season. The 6-foot-8 right-hander has made 47 relief appearances in the majors.

Brian Butch had a double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Damion James and Stephen Dennis each scored a team-high 21 points as the Bakersfield Jam (23-9) topped the Los Angeles D-Fenders (13-19), 115-103, at the Dignity Health Event Center.
