MONTEREY PARK -- Mitchell Huxhold broke the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and Cal State Bakersfield 500 freestyle record twice Thursday at the MPSF Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Huxhold posted a time of 4 minutes, 21.82 seconds during the preliminaires to lower the league and school mark in the race. The time was also a NCAA "B" Cut time as well. In the finals, Huxhold won with an even better 4:21.50.
CSUB's 200 freestyle relay team of Fran Cverle, Mitch Wurm, Dan Wickensheimer and Alex Daneke placed fifth in 1:21.16, the second best time in school history.
Other individuals scoring for CSUB were 3-meter diver Troy Neklason (fourth, 318.05), Carson May (seventh, 500 free, 4:29.77) Wickensheimer (11th, 50 free, 20.67), Gabriel Bertrand (12th, 500 free, 4:27.79).
Wyoming (230.5 points) leads the 10 teams in scoring. The Roadrunners are fifth (145.5).
Competition continues today and Saturday.
On Wednesday, the opeing day of the meet, the Roadrunners broke two school records.
CSUB's 800 free relay team of Daneke, Bertrand, Huxhold and Dennis Cassidy finished third in 6:32.06, besting the previous mark of 6:32.67 set last season. The 200 medley relay of Daneke, Joao Foresto, Wickensheimer and Mitch Wurm posted a 1:29.15 to break the 2011 school mark of 1:29.33. They placed fifth in the race.
BC wins basketball finale
SANTA CLARITA -- Conroy Lester scored 25 points and Ed Daniels grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bakersfield College men's basketball team to a 60-57 victory over Los Angeles Valley College in the final game of the season for both teams.
BC (10-15) led 32-30 at halftime but there were four lead changes in second half of the game, which was played at College of the Canyons. Eddie Toray, Cameron Bailey 13 and Gino Soloman scored 13 points apiece for the Monarchs (5-19).
Bakersfield's Bhavik Patel shot a 1-under-par 69 and was in a 13-way tie for 22nd place after the opening round of the Web.com Tour's Panama Claro Championship at Panama City, Panama.
U.S. players Mark Anderson and Andrew Loupe tied for the first-round lead at 6-under-par 64 in the tour's first event of the season.
Patel had five birdies and four bogeys. He birdied holes 11 through14.
TAFT-- Catcher Adrian Rodriguez finish 2-for-3 with a double and drove in the lone run in Taft College's 7-1 loss to College of the Sequoias in a Central Valley Conference baseball opener.
The Cougars (3-7-1) and Giants will meet again today at 2 p.m. at Taft.
LANCASTER -- Heather Rahill scored on a single by Britney Roberts for the lone Bakersfield College run as the Renegades lost 9-1 to Antelope Valley College.
Brooke Charles and Rahill had the only other hits for the Renegades (1-7). Bakersfield will host the BC Classic this weekend and will play Mount San Antonio at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
