LAS VEGAS -- Stephon Carter scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half Sunday to help Cal State Bakersfield rally for a 69-64 win over Mississippi Valley State in the final round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic at The Orleans Arena.
Carter's second-half scoring helped CSUB overcame a six-point deficit to win in the final round of its first regular-season tournament at the Division I level.
"The second half I thought we played the way we needed to play," CSUB coach Rod Barnes said. "I thought our kids hung in there, showed some toughness. I thought our guys worked hard and stayed right there in the game, which enabled us to pull out a win."
Brandon Barnes scored 16 points, Tyrone White added 15 and Javonte Maynor had 10 for the Roadrunners. Maynor made three 3-pointers.
Playing their fifth game in eight days and their second in a row, the Roadrunners looked to their bench and got a nice contribution from junior guard Matthew Ratto, who scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and made several key defensive plays in the second half.
"Matt is a scrapper; he's a kid that's been working hard in practice," Barnes said. "Today I thought ... he gave us huge numbers as far as those points and rebounds ... and I was very pleased with the way he played."
CSUB trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, and by six at halftime. With 13:49 left, a Carter layup cut the deficit to 45-44. The Delta Devils' Davon Usher committed a turnover on the ensuing possession on a backcourt violation, which also led to a technical foul on MVSU coach Chico Potts.
Carter tied the game with one free throw before Adam Young hit a three-pointer on the next possession to give the 'Runners the lead for good.
CSUB outrebounded MVSU 37-26. Brandon Barnes and Young led CSUB with seven rebounds apiece.
Usher led Mississippi Valley (0-9) with a game-high 26 points, making 5-of-10 shots from the field and 15-of-19 free throws
The Roadrunners will return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday at Loyola Marymount. The Roadrunners then host North Carolina A&T at Rabobank Arena at 4 p.m Sunday.
