The No. 2-seed Bakersfield College women's volleyball team is set to host third-seeded Golden West College of Huntington Beach at 7 p.m. today in the third round of the Southern California regional playoffs, with a berth into the state Final Four on the line.
The Renegades advanced to the third round by beating No. 15 seed Fullerton College, (25-21, 25-11, 25-17, and then No. 10 Mount San Antonio, 25-11, 25-22, 25-22. Golden West has beaten No. 14 Antelope Valley College, 25-7, 25-17, 25-21, and No. 6 San Diego Mesa, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.
"The most important match of the year is this match!" said coach Carl Ferreira. "Our focus in this match is not to qualify for the Final Four; that's just one of our goals. We want to be at our best when our best is needed most, and in order to do that we must eliminate distractions, trust each other, and be fully present to perform at our highest level in the moment."
BC is led by All-American outside hitter Caitlin Bernardin, who is averaging nearly five kills per game, first team All-Western State Conference picks Samantha Whittington (setter), Edithza Urias (outside hitter) Monica Barksdale (libero), and other all-WSC picks Cailee Luter, Taylor Ariey, Alyssa Mathews and Charisma Hernandez.
Tonight's winner will advance to the California Community College State Championship Final Four at Fullerton College Saturday and Sunday.
High school football
Tickets for Friday's Sanger-at-Garces Central Section Division II football championship will go on sale at 8 a.m. today at Garces' main office.
The tickets will be sold at the school from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. through Thursday, and until noon on Friday.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
