Bakersfield rider Fred Berger won two classes and finished second in two classes to land the 2012 Classic 250cc championship of the Southern Cal Flat Track Association for the second year in a row on a 1967 Bultaco maintained by Jeff Lessley. Berger also was second in the over-50 championship. Berger raced a borrowed 450cc Honda for the second day of racing after his Triumph refused to cooperate. Other outstanding riders from Bakersfield were Clayton Williams, who won the 85cc championship, and Dan Dowding, who placed second both days in the Senior Class after not racing for a year and a half.

Jason Semchak, a Bakersfield native who moved to Southern California last year to play hockey at a higher level, was named a North American Prospects Hockey League peak performer for the month of October. Semchak, who was stricken with Valley Fever during the summer and missed the first part of the season, posted a pair of shutouts in his first two starts to help his California Titans go 4-0 en route to a tournament championship in San Jose. Semchak, 18, stopped 31 shots in his first game and 24 in the other. The Titans are an 18 and under AAA Midget team. Semchak played most of last season for the AA Titans before being called up the AAA team in the PHL championship series where he made 40 saves in a 3-2 loss in the round-robin tournament. The Titans (7-2-0) are leading the Red Division, which has teams in Texas, Indiana, Phoenix and Detroit.
