VALENCIA -- Samantha Whittington tallied 44 assists and 13 digs to help the Bakersfield College volleyball team to a 25-27, 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 Western State Conference victory Wednesday over College of the Canyons.

BC's Caitlin Bernardin had 16 kills and 11 digs, and Edithza Urias added 14 kills. The Renegades (12-4, 2-2 WSC), are ranked No. 6 in the state.

Taft sweeps COS

Chanel Cantere had 16 kills and 12 digs to help the Taft College volleyball team sweep host College of the Sequoias, 25-18, 25-14, 25-18, in a Central Valley Conference match.

Tiffany Matusaga had 16 digs, and Sina Mauga added seven blocks and four kills for the Cougars (11-5, 4-2 CVC), who are in third place in the CVC behind Fresno City College and Porterville.

Taft plays host at 6 p.m. Friday to Reedley.

JC women's golf

SIMI VALLEY-- Cambria Ullrich shot an 87 to lead Bakersfield College to a third-place finish at College of the Canyons. Glendale won the tournament, defeating Canyons in a playoff. Other top finishers for the Renegades were Chelsey Roberts (92) and Melissa Lopez (94).

Zardes projected first, the official website for Major League Soccer, projects Cal State Bakersfield junior Gyasi Zardes to be the top pick in the MLS SuperDraft in January.

Zardes has seven goals and six assists in nine games for the Roadrunners this year. The website mentions that the L.A. Galaxy have rights to Zardes because of geography but that rumors also continue to swirl that European clubs could try to sign him.

JV game wanted

The Bishop junior varsity football team is looking for an area JV team to play at 4 p.m. Friday at Frazier Mountain. The Broncos were left with an open date when Frazier Mountain's JV cancelled the game.
