With perspiration pouring down his face Coleman Hammond gets in a good laugh with teammates after wrestling practice.

Bakersfield High senior Coleman Hammond has verbally committed to wrestle at Cal State Bakersfield, according to his father, Ray. Ray wrestled at CSUB, as does Coleman's older brother, Bryce, who redshirted last year.

Coleman Hammond took fourth place in the CIF State Championships as a freshman in 2010 and last spring as a junior. He is rated the No. 5 senior in the nation at his weight class by FloWrestling.

Hammond also had heavy recruiting interest from Missouri, Maryland, Cal Poly and Lehigh. Verbal commitments are non-binding; Hammond can sign a binding letter of intent in November.

Carr named player of the week

Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr, a Bakersfield Christian graduate, was named the Mountain West Conference's Offensive Player of the Week.

Carr, a redshirt junior, broke a school and conference record with 579 yards of total offense in a 52-40 Bulldogs victory over San Diego State on Saturday.

He threw for 536 yards, tying a school record, and five touchdowns, and ran for 43 more.
