Daniel Richardson, 14, competed in the AAU West Coast Junior Olympics over the weekend at Reno and set two meet records on his way to winning three golds and one silver medal. Richardson shattered the meet record in the youth boys discus with a toss of 179 feet, 5 inches, the best in the nation this year. Richardson is a three-time defending national champion in this event. He also placed first and set a meet record in the shot put (46-08), won the high jump (5-6) and was second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.59). Richardson will compete in the National Junior Olympics in Houston in August. Richardson, who will be a freshman at Frontier High, is coached by Frontier's Jeff Caneta.

Justin Darter Jr., of Bakersfield won the 2012 USA Wrestling Kids National Championship for his weight division. Darter finished his season as the West Regional Champion in freestyle wrestling (Pocatello, Idaho, June 21-23) and the National Champion in freestyle and Greco-Roman (Orem,Utah, June 25-27). Darter was also a 2012 California USA Wrestling Triple-Crown Award winner, winning state titles in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman. This was also Darter's third consecutive year winning the state freestyle championship. This year he competed in the intermediate age group (9-10) at 112 pounds. Darter trains with the Arvin Grizzlies and Dave Schultz Elite wrestling clubs and is coached by Jose Marin and Gerry Abas. He will be a 5th grader at Our Lady of Perpetual Help school this fall. Think you can hit a top-level softball pitcher? If you have an extra $20, you can take your chances Saturday against former Centennial High, UCLA and USA pitcher Megan Langenfeld, who is helping to raise money for the Legacy 14U softball team, which earned a berth into the ASA National tournament, July 30-Aug. 5 in Sioux Falls, S.D., and is raising money for travel expenses. $20 will get you 10 swings against Langenfeld. Hit the fence and you get your $20 back. Hit a home run, and get your $20 back, plus an extra $20. The fundraiser will start at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the BC softball field.
