I recently read a disturbing article in the Los Angeles Times on the uncaring attitude of Bakersfield's citizens ("Muted outcry over Kern County beating: 'We've gotten used to a lot here'," May 20). The beating death of an innocent, unarmed local man by members of local law enforcement, including the Kern County Sheriff's Office, was its focus.

Many in this city claim to be Christians and Republicans, but I see little evidence of either. One of the main tenets of the Republican Party is lean, thrifty, frugal government. Are the people aware of the many millions of their tax dollars being spent to pay for lawsuits to families of loved ones who died in the hands of our local law enforcement? It seems that they really don't care whether their hard-earned tax dollars are wasted or not. What kind of Republicans are they anyway?
