Long have a majority of readers of The Californian waited for someone to call out Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, to lead reform. As the House Majority whip he has the opportunity to lead the "change" not only on immigration reform but also to bring back some sort of trust and respect in our broken government. I commend Editorial Page Editor Robert Price for calling him out on this matter ("McCarthy ought to lead on reform," Feb. 3). McCarthy has been hiding out, waiting for others to control what he says. McCarthy is great for our community, but he shouldn't be a puppet in the political world -- he should be a leader.

I am hoping McCarthy realizes it is not a left or right issue, it's a human issue. Children and families are involved that may one day may elect McCarthy to a higher office/position based on the choices and decisions he makes or doesn't make today.
