At a hearing before the Gun Violence Prevention Working Group last week in Hartford, Conn., Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son was among those slain in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, asked why it was necessary to have assault rifles with extended magazines. There was silence for a moment, then someone yelled, "Second Amendment!" Yet another shouted, "The Second Amendment shall not be infringed!"
Really? What about the children? Isn't it safe to say they were infringed upon? No, they were massacred! No matter how loud rabid enthusiasts shout, our children are far more important than their military-grade assault weapons. Do they not tell their children what the rest of us tell ours, that we love them eternally and unconditionally? Do they really add the disclaimer, "But we love our guns more"? The gun lobby makes me ill, viciously, physically ill.
