Hundreds of thousands of Californians just got $115 or $150 tax raises on their property for firefighting fees that will most likely do nothing but help pay retirements and fill the firefighter union coffers, which in turn will grease the pockets of politicians to keep them in line. We got duped into raising taxes on ourselves and the net result will probably be the same as the firefighting fees -- richer unions and richer bought-off politicians. Net gain for the California citizen? Zilch.
Now, this newspaper recommends a revision of Proposition 13 ("Is every pillar of Prop. 13 sacrosanct?," Our View, Dec .16) to get even more money to throw into the wind. To quote Robert Price in an unrelated column, "sanity has its work cut out."
