Golden Empire Transit's new bus schedules do save me time, but at what cost? I live on the south side of Bakersfield and work near Rosedale. Getting there hasn't been a problem, but getting home is a different story. I get off work at 5 p.m., catch the bus at 5:30, transfer to the express at 5:45, and catch the last bus on my home route at 6 p.m.
At least once a week, one of the connecting buses is late, which makes me miss my last bus, so I end up walking about three miles to get home. If I need groceries or medicine -- forget it, unless I want to walk. The new routes are mainly for college kids, not for seniors. The stops are now about six blocks apart. Try that in a wheelchair, or with a cane. The biggest complaints I hear from the other riders are that the stops are too far apart, and that the buses need to run until at least 8 p.m. I agree with them. The people that can walk easily are the ones that the bus caters to. Too bad for the seniors.
