I am writing in regard to the Oct. 10 letter "Why are we honoring him?," which refers to Barack Obama's Oct. 8 visit to Keene to dedicate the Cesar Chavez National Monument, named for the United Farm Workers co-founder. I have been a union member for more than 60 years and I am glad of it because of all the benefits I enjoyed: vacation, health insurance, paid holidays, decent wages, etc. Yes, we need to honor Cesar Chavez because he kept these people, legal and illegal immigrants alike, from being used as underpaid slave labor.

As for the letter writer's statement that "maybe next we should memorialize Jimmy Hoffa," a big yes. Why not? Hoffa did much for organized labor, too. Evidently, the writer has a cushy job or was born with a silver spoon in his big mouth.
