2014 BVarsity All-Area Baseball Team

Player of the Year

Christian Deaton * senior

Frontier * outfielder

Outstanding defensive player also got it done at the plate, hitting .444 with 40 hits, a .589 on-base percentage and 14 stolen bases. Deaton will play for Cal State Bakersfield.

First team

James Carroll * senior

Stockdale * outfielder

The city's leading hitter at .512, Carroll sported an almost comically high on-base percentage (.626) and slugging percentage (.853). He also stole 14 bases and had a 3.14 ERA in 35 innings pitched.

David Carter * senior

Tehachapi * utility

The Southeast Yosemite League MVP did everything for the Warriors, who won SEYL and reached the semifinals of the D-III Central Section playoffs. He hit .397 with 10 doubles and went 4-2 with a 2.67 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 42 innings, all in relief.

Joey Cooper * senior

Highland * outfielder

The all-SEYL performer had an even .500 batting average, which was buoyed by six doubles, five triples and three home runs, and the speedy Cooper added 11 stolen bases.

Andrew Hansen * junior

Centennial * utility

The Golden Hawks ace was 7-2 with a 1.84 ERA, including shutouts of Southwest Yosemite League champ Frontier and Independence in league play. Oh, and Hansen hit .356 with seven doubles and four home runs, and he scored 29 runs.

Kyle James * senior

Ridgeview * infielder

Co-MVP of the South Yosemite League hit .417 and scored 41 runs, the most in Kern County. He also stole 12 bases and had two saves as a pitcher for the 27-4 Wolf Pack, which swept through the SYL.

Josh Medina * senior

Liberty * infielder

First-team all-Southwest Yosemite League selection hit .431 with six home runs, tied for second in the area. Medina also is a good shortstop defensively and stole seven bases, highest on his team.

Jassen Oliver * junior

Liberty * outfielder

Oliver's 50 hits were three more than anyone else in the county. Overall, he hit .413 with 16 doubles, also a county best. Add in four triples and two homers, and you have one of the county's very best hitters.

Eric Ontiveros * senior

Ridgeview * utility

This jack of all trades pitched in relief (four saves), as a starter (5-2 with a 1.34 ERA) and also as a first baseman and outfielder. He hit .375 with eight extra-base hits and 11 stolen bases.

Ross Puskarich * senior

Liberty * infielder

His gaudy numbers included a .459 batting average, a .734 slugging percentage and six home runs. He batted in the heart of the order for a Patriots team that gave eventual D-I section finalist Clovis-Buchanan a scare in the quarterfinals.

Harrison Smith * senior

Frontier * infielder

Smith batted .376 with team highs in doubles (12) and home runs (5) for the Southwest Yosemite League's runaway champions. He also played a good second base and pitched in relief, earning three saves.

Monty Stevens * senior

Frontier * pitcher

One of the workhorses on the Titans' shutdown pitching staff, Stevens was 8-1 with a 3.08 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings. He also hit .360 with eight doubles at the plate.

Austin Toerner * junior

Golden Valley * pitcher

He struck out 117 batters in 79 innings en route to an 8-4 record and 1.24 ERA, including victories in D-IV section quarterfinals and semifinals. He also was the Bulldogs' best hitter at .444 with 12 doubles.

Kody Wright * senior

Liberty * catcher

Wright hit .321 with 16 RBIs and great defense behind the plate -- and those numbers jumped to a .410 batting average and 15 of the 16 RBIs during rough-and-tumble SWYL play.
