Rumors circulating on social media early Friday that a Centennial High School student passed out cupcakes containing bodily fluids appear to be false.
Bakersfield police said the cupcakes contained items such as mayonnaise, barbecue sauce and soy sauce, but there's no indication they contained bodily fluids. At this point in the investigation, the incident can be categorized as a prank carried out in connection with a dispute between students, police Sgt. Joe Grubbs said.
Witness statements contradict allegations that semen or hair were mixed into the cake batter, Grubbs said. All of the involved students' families were notified, and none wanted further action other than administrative discipline through the Kern High School District.
It was reported that several students tasted the cupcakes and spit them out because of the poor taste, Grubbs said. One student ate an entire cupcake and stayed home from school the next day after becoming ill.
No students required medical aid.
Grubbs said the cupcakes were destroyed before police were notified. He added the matter was "thoroughly investigated" by Kern High School District police and Centennial High School personnel before Bakersfield police became involved.
