If some neighbors are successful in their bid, a gate would be erected at Country Club and Pinehurst drives, along with two other intersections in the Country Club neighborhood.

A plan to gate off a neighborhood near Bakersfield Country Club has been withdrawn from consideration on Tuesday's Kern County Board of Supervisors agenda.

Sylvia Mendez, representing the neighbors on Wingfoot Drive and Pinehurst Drive in northeast Bakersfield, asked for the item to be withdrawn, according to Kern County Planning Director Lorelei Oviatt.

That means, Oviatt said, that supervisors will not hear the item on Tuesday.

Opposition had mounted against the idea from area residents who would have been outside the gated enclave. And Mendez indicated this week that the group supporting the gates wants to stop, take a breath and work with its neighbors to come up with a plan everyone could accept.

Oviatt said the supporters' plan would be to develop gating proposals for other areas of high-end homes near the country club.

That idea, she said, is problematic.

"There are fundamental concerns that I have about the integrity of a neighborhood when you start closing streets to the public," Oviatt said.
