Theresa Thistle, left, and Doc Mathews pitch in at the Murray Family Farms booth at Garden Fest in 2012. The annual event at Bakersfield College — offering gardening seminars, a farmers market, demonstrations and vendors — takes place Saturday.

The Horticulture Department at Bakersfield College is expecting thousands of guests on the campus Saturday for the ninth annual Garden Fest, an open house that features country garden seminars, tips from industry professionals and information on gardening, floral design, pet care, 150 vendor booths, cooking demonstrations and more.

"The Country Garden Radio" program, which airs on KERN-AM, 1180, will broadcast live from 8 to 10 a.m.

The interactive Garden Fest seminars are hosted by Bakersfield College's plant professor, Lindsay Ono, and landscape industry professional the Sultan of Sod, Dale Edwards from Old River Sod.

The Country Garden duo will be joined in the seminars by industry professionals to demonstrate and talk gardening as well as answer questions from the audience. Grilling with the Chef is an interactive demonstration on grilling meats and vegetables with Bakersfield College's chef Patrick Coyle. Coyle will use fresh produce selected that day from the Renegade Ranch Farmers Market, and the audience will have the opportunity to taste-test the results. New this year is the Club Carnival games area, presented by BC's student clubs and organizations. Games include Dunk the President, Bob for Apples, Ring the Bottle and more.
