VAN NUYS -- Bakersfield College was leading the women's team standings and was third in the men's after Thursday's first day of the Western State Conference swimming and diving championships at L.A. Valley College.
The women's highlight was a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Shelby Bayne, Elizabeth Hargis, Ashley Foster and Clarissa Gardella timed 1:39.64.
The BC women had 185 points, 43 ahead second-place Valley. The men had 170, which trailed Ventura (208) and Cuesta (183).
The BC men had one first-place finish. Andrew Hargis won the 500 free in 4:34.61. Hargis was also on BC's third-place 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
The two BC teams combined for 14 top-10 finishes.
Other top finishers for the BC women were seconds by Elizabeth Hargis in the 500 free (5:24.10), Shelby Bayne in the 100 individual medley (1:01.60) and Gardella in the 50 free (24.62).
Heather Bryan (5:31.69) and Paige Richardson (5:37.79) were fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 500 free.
Other top marks by the men were a second by Spencer Kerwin in the 500 free (4:46.84); Michael Fink (21.75) and Casey Moehnke (21.86) were fifth and sixth in the 50 free.
Day two saw big finishes for both men's and women's teams. Andrew Hargis won the 400 IM for the men, who also saw the team of Hargis, Spencer Kerwin, Casey Moehnke and Chance Marchini win the 800 freesyle relay.
The women led the team competition 415-385 over L.A. Valley after day two. The team of Elizabeth Hargis, Nancy Ramirez, Paige Richardson and Shelby Bayne won the women's 800 freestlye relay.
