STOCKTON -- Blaze right-hander Ben Lively pitched six shutout innings and Bakersfield broke the game open with a four-run eighth to beat Stockton 8-3 Wednesday night.
At 11-3, the Blaze has the best record in the California League and Wednesday's win ensured that Bakersfield will win its fourth straight series to open the season.
Lively (3-0) struck out 10 and walked none while allowing two hits as he lowered his ERA to 0.53.
Jesse Winker gave the Blaze a 1-0 lead with his second home run of the season in the first inning.
Bakersfield made it 2-0 in the sixth thanks to wildness by Stockton starter Shawn Haviland (1-2).
Ryan Wright singled and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out. Marquez Smith was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
The Blaze tacked on two runs in the seventh. Two more walks started the rally and Bakersfield added two stolen bases and two singles in the inning to score twice and make it 4-0.
Bakersfield took an 8-0 lead in the top of the eighth. Juan Silva's two-run double and Wright's two-run single did the damage.
Stockton scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to make the final score more respectable.
Bakersfield begins a three-game series with the San Jose Giants tonight at Sam Lynn Ballpark starting at 7:15. The scheduled starters are Wandy Perelta for the Blaze and Martin Agosta for San Jose.
REEDLEY -- Reedley College broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth and added four in the seventh en route to a 10-3 win over Bakersfield College at the College of the Sequoias tournament.
BC (12-20) scored in the third on an RBI groundout by losing pitcher Cole Hallum. Rolando Martinez's RBI double put BC ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth before Reedley sent nine men to the plate to score five runs. There were four hits, a BC error, a walk and a hit batsman in the inning.
BC added a run in the ninth on Erik Williams' RBI single.
BC plays host to Saddleback College today at noon in the final game of the COS tournament.
Taft lost 8-3 at Fullerton on Wednesday.
