Wrestler of the Year

Bryce Martin * Bakersfield

170 pounds * senior * 39-2

Martin won his fourth Southwest Yosemite League title and successfully defended his Central Section championship and then reached the state final, where he lost to St. John Bosco's Anthony Valencia, the only opponent to beat him. Martin will wrestle for Indiana.

First team

Navonte Demison * Bakersfield

106 pounds * freshman * 41-10

After an up-and-down season, Demison broke through with third-place finishes at the Yosemite Divisional, the Central Section Masters and the state championships, becoming the third brother in his family to earn a state medal.

J.J. Figueroa * Bakersfield

113 pounds * freshman * 38-8

Figueroa placed in the top three at some of the state's toughest tournaments -- third at the Doc Buchanan, second at Temecula Valley and champion of the Central Section Masters -- before going 2-2 in his first state tournament.

Carlos Herrera * Bakersfield

120 pounds * junior * 40-12

Another Driller who turned it on at the end of the year, Herrera took third at the Yosemite Divisional, reached the Masters final and then earned his first state medal by finishing sixth at Rabobank.

Sean Nickell * Bakersfield

126 pounds * senior * 38-15

Nickell won a league title and made the most of his first state-meet experience, beating state No. 6 Anthony Hernandez of Vacaville in the first round and finishing 2-2 at the tournament.

Arik Onsurez * Bakersfield

132 pounds * senior * 28-17

Second-team All-Area selection last year at 120, Onsurez returned to the state meet and won two matches after a season in which he placed at four tournaments.

Josh Annis * Bakersfield

138 pounds * junior * 36-15

Annis came from third place in his own league to fifth place in the entire section within two weeks to reach his first state tournament. He also won the Kern County Invitational in January.

Antonio Gutierrez * Bakersfield

145 pounds * sophomore * 23-14

Gutierrez battled through injuries for most of the season to return to the state tournament with an SWYL championship and a fourth-place finish at the section Masters meet.

Andrew Lee * Centennial

152 pounds * senior * 31-12

After winning the Rumble for the Rig early in the season, Lee suffered a mid-season slump before bouncing back to win the SWYL and take fifth in the section, becoming the Golden Hawks' first state qualifier in five years.

Jake Maas * Liberty

160 pounds * senior * 34-9

One of the area's most resilient wrestlers, Maas beat two opponents he had lost to previously to place fourth in the section, then rebounded from a first-round loss to place in the top 12 at state.

Carlos Montejo * Frontier

182 pounds * senior * 37-10

Montejo won four tournaments, including the SWYL title, then placed sixth in the section and won two matches at the state tournament for the second straight year.

Josh Bailey * Frontier

195 pounds * senior * 36-9

Bailey, who will wrestle at the U.S. Naval Academy, wrestled a tough schedule and came out looking good, winning the Titan Duals, placing at the Doc Buchanan and reaching the Central Section final.

Jaccob Lopez * Ridgeview

195 pounds * junior * 27-5

After an early-season injury, Lopez came back and didn't lose until the finals of the Yosemite Divisional. He then placed fifth in the section and won two matches at state.

Travis Yarbrough * Bakersfield

220 pounds * senior * 27-10

Yarbrough placed at three of the state's toughest tournaments: Seventh at Doc Buchanan, eighth at Temecula Valley and fourth in the Central Section. He qualified for his first state tournament.

Mark Guerrero * North

Heavyweight * senior * 33-11

Guerrero reached the finals of four tournaments, including the Kern County Invitational and the Rumble for the Rig, and he placed eighth in the section to become North's first state qualifier in six years.
