Students at two schools who walked or rode their bicycles to class Friday were met by California Highway Patrol officers who were on a mission to promote safety.

About 1,000 students from Ramon Garza Elementary and Sierra Middle schools traveled to school with parents, teachers, officers and Chipper the CHP mascot. Volunteers from the Kern County Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition joined in.

The CHP says a federal grant will be used to establish a pedestrian and bicyclist safety and enforcement project.
