A Bakersfield man died Wednesday afternoon after the car he was riding in slammed head-on into an SUV carrying two children on Eucalyptus Drive.
The victim was identified as Jason Harmon. The California Highway Patrol gave Harmon's age as 34 while the Kern County Coroner's Office listed his age as 35.
According to the CHP, a Ford Taurus driven by Scott Mullen, 38, of Bakersfield, was headed eastbound on Eucalyptus near Morning Drive at a high speed about 3 p.m. while weaving from side to side.
Vanessa Bonilla, 33, was driving a Suburban westbound on Eucalyptus. She slowed in order to avoid a collision but the CHP said the Taurus struck the SUV head-on.
The impact pushed the Taurus into a utility pole, shearing the vehicle in half. Harmon was ejected and died at the scene.
Mullen was taken to Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
Bonilla and her passengers, Luis Magana, 8, and David Leon, 11, all of Bakersfield, suffered minor injuries and were taken KMC.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs factored in the collision. The accident remains under investigation.
