Condors goaltender Tyler Bunz, hit in the throat by a puck during Saturday night's game against Ontario, was released from a Fresno hospital on Monday afternoon after suffering damaged vocal cords and a fractured larynx.
The good news: no surgery required.
Bunz initially went to a Bakersfield hospital after Saturday night's game but coach Troy Mann said he had to go to Fresno where there was an ear, throat and nose specialist on hand.
"After 22 years I guess Ill listen to my mom & wear a neckguard," Bunz tweeted from his hospital bed on Sunday.
Mann said Bunz told him he will be out at least two weeks.
That leaves the Condors with just one goaltender -- Chet Pickard.
Bunz was making his first start for the Condors since Jan. 25 on Saturday night after being sent down from AHL Oklahoma City on Thursday. That send down came a day after the Barons called up Laurent Brossoit.
An injury to Edmonton goalie Victor Fasth in practice on Monday earned Brossoit and emergency call up to the NHL, where he is expected to be on the bench for the Oilers game against San Jose tonight.
Just three weeks ago, Condors coach Troy Mann was flush with healthy bodies, but with three players now in the AHL and a rash of injuries the Condors are limping toward the playoffs.
The Condors went 24-10-4 between Nov. 27 and March 5 -- the best record in the ECHL -- but are 3-6 in their last nine games.
They played a set of four games over five days with just five defenseman and are now down to four healthy D-men as Jordan Heywood returned to college after Tuesday night's 4-1 loss to Las Vegas.
Bakersfield started Saturday night's game against Ontario with 10 forwards, but are now down to nine when Ryan Watson was injured in the first period. Mann said Watson, like Bunz, will be out at least two weeks.
"We turned the corner but now we're just treading water," Mann said.
As for bringing in players finishing up college or junior careers, Mann said "there's a lot of irons in the fire but nothing that will help us out (tonight against the Alaska Aces.)"
