Bakersfield police are asking the public's help in identifying a suspect wanted for attempted grand theft auto and possession of stolen property.

At 9:40 a.m. Sunday, the suspect drove into the Sears parking lot at 3001 Ming Ave. in a 1998 black Honda Civic two-door with California license plate 4AQL843. Police said he parked next to a white Honda.

The suspect got in the Honda and tried to steal the vehicle but was prevented from doing so because it was equipped with a steering wheel anti-theft device, police said. He got back into the Civic, which has been reported stolen, and left the area.

The suspect is described as white, mid-20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, thin build, wearing a black baseball cap with blue bill, gray hooded sweatshirt, white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call Detective Dennis Murphy at 326-3567.
