Despite multiple efforts by volunteers and organizations trash is visible in many parts of town including Highway 58, as shown in this file photo. Downtown business owners and workers are being urged to pick up trash around their businesses for one hour on Valentine's Day.

Organizers of a new litter cleanup campaign are asking area employees to show a little love to downtown Bakersfield this Valentine's Day.

Keep Bakersfield Beautiful, the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce Vision 2020 Image Committee and the Downtown Business Association are teaming up to appeal to the better cupids of our nature.

They are asking downtown businesses and their employees to show a little heart by committing one hour on Friday to cleaning up trash from around their places of business.

Picking up litter may not, on first glance, sound like a traditional Valentine's Day activity, but who knows, a spotless downtown may turn out to be the perfect place to begin a budding romance.

Organizers said in a news release that participating businesses have a chance to win an "I Love Bakersfield" gift basket when photos of the collected litter are posted on the Chamber's Facebook page with the hashtag #ilovebakersfield.

The prize goes to the photo with the most "Likes."

Jessica Felix of Keep Bakersfield Beautiful said KBB will provide free bags and gloves and will happily haul away the collected trash. Interested businesses are asked to commit before Tuesday.
