Jolene Shepardson, who took over a winless volleyball program at Cal State Bakersfield three seasons ago and led the Roadrunners to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament finals this season, has accepted the head volleyball coaching job at San Jose State.
CSUB athletic director Jeff Konya said he was told about 5 p.m. Thursday that Shepardson had accepted the Spartans' position.
"I am honored to accept this position and grateful to (San Jose State) president (Mohammad) Qayoumi, athletics director Gene Bleymaier ... and the entire search committee for trusting us with the San Jose State volleyball program," Shepardson said in SJSU's release.
Shepardson's husband, Aaron, will also be part of the Spartans' volleyball coaching staff, Konya said. Aaron Shepardson was the head coach of CSUB's sand volleyball team that plays its matches in the spring.
Konya said Olivia Simko, who was an assistant coach with the Roadrunners this season, has been named interim sand volleyball coach and will be considered for the director of volleyball position.
Konya said San Jose State contacted him about a week ago asking permission to speak with Shepardson.
"We always allow that," Konya said. "Professional courtesy."
The Shepardsons coached at Virginia Tech before coming to CSUB.
"They got an unbelievable deal," Konya said. "It's unfortunate, but at the same time we are happy they were here and they left the program in great shape, and we think well attract a really good coach."
The Roadrunners went 21-12 last fall and went 43-47 in Shepardson's three seasons as head coach.
The Shepardsons are the latest CSUB coaches who have accepted head coaching jobs at San Jose State.
In late December, longtime men's soccer coach Simon Tobin resigned after 27 years at CSUB to take over the Spartans' program. Ex-CSUB women's basketball coach Tim La Kose became the Spartans' head coach in the spring of 2011, but resigned from the program a month before the start of this season.
