The Kern County Superintendent of Schools is seeking volunteers for the Kern County Community Reading Project for the spring semester, which runs January through May.

The project trains community members to become reading coaches for second-graders, a Superintendent of Schools news release said.

There is a two-hour training to learn the guided reading technique; then volunteers commit to one hour, one day a week for at least one semester.

Each volunteer coaches four students individually for 15 minutes and there is a different volunteer in each classroom every day, the news release said.

For those interested, the following are the training times and dates: Jan. 4 from 9 to 11 a.m.; Jan. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Jan. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. All trainings will take place in room 1B at City Centre, 1300 17th St. and you only need to attend one.

No pre-registration is necessary. For more information, contact Teresa Twisselman at 636-4645.
