An investment group led by GE Energy Financial Services has completed its purchase of a 1,100-acre, 143-megawatt photovoltaic solar power plant in Rosamond.

The group bought a minority stake in San Diego-based EDF Renewable Energy's Catalina Solar plant in 2012. It acquired the rest of the project after the plant achieved commercial operations last summer.

The plant sells its electricity -- enough to power 35,000 homes -- to San Diego Gas & Electric Co.

GE Energy Financial's partners on the investment were Citi, Union Bank N.A. and Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.

Cal Water gave $7,500 to the Boys & Girls Club of Kern County and $7,500 to the Bakersfield Police Activities League.

District Manager Rudy Valles emphasized that the money comes from company shareholders, not from water rates.

Owners of the McDonald's at 1812 Union Ave. recently celebrated the restaurant's reconstruction.

Ron and Ana Johns spent nearly $2 million razing, and then rebuilding, the location, which opened more than 20 years ago. The couple hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 11.

A group spokesman said operators of Kern County McDonald's -- all of which are locally owned -- have invested about $20 million in new construction and upgrades over the past three years.

California's first "Main Street" model of The UPS Store has opened in Tehachapi.

Franchisee Gurpinder Riar recently started operations at 1121 West Valley Blvd., 50 miles from the nearest The UPS Store. Its business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The San Diego-based franchise launched the Main Street concept earlier this year as a way to provide business services to rural areas.

McFarland entrepreneurs Steve and Carol Loflin are the new owners of Molly Maid of Bakersfield.

The couple took over the local franchise earlier this year. Their youngest daughter, Cryssi, is office administrator. The residential cleaning service includes Delano, Shafter, Tehachapi and Wasco.

The Loflins also own Delano Driving School, Higher Ground Homes and New Horizon Homes.

Molly Maid is based in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Rain for Rent has won top recognition from Nebraska-based irrigation system manufacturer Reinke Manufacturing Co. Inc.

Reinke presented the Bakersfield-based liquids handling company with a Gold Reinke Pride award at an annual convention in October.

Reinke said Rain for Rent distinguished itself with superior market share, merchandising, professionalism, maintenance and other factors.
