Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez will not run for the state Senate next year, she announced Friday.

Perez, a Democrat, lost the 16th Senate District seat to Republican Andy Vidak in a special election earlier this year. Vidak is expected to run for re-election next year, though his district will become the 14th District as a result of redistricting.

Perez said in a news release there is a lot of work to do on the Board of Supervisors, to which she was elected in 2012.

"This coming year, the Kern County Board of Supervisors has the opportunity of ushering in an unprecedented era of economic growth and stability for families in Kern County and throughout California," Perez said in the release. "These and other issues are of such magnitude that I must focus all of my attention, in collaboration with my colleagues, on the processes that will revitalize our local and state economies."

Earlier this week, Fresno Unified School District board member Luis Chavez, a Democrat, announced plans to run for the state Senate seat.
