Air district officials are continuing the season's first ban on fireplace use through Monday in five counties, including Kern.
The prohibition, brought on by poor air quality, started at midnight Sunday.
Burning wood, pellets and manufactured fire logs in residential fireplaces, stoves and outdoor burning devices like fire pits and chimineas, is forbidden.
The Check Before You Burn program runs November through February to reduce winter pollution. The wood-burning ban does not apply if burning solid fuel is a home's only source of heat, or if a residence does not have access to natural gas, even if propane is used.
Violators of the ban can be fined.
