A 23-year-old Bakersfield man was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 58 Friday morning.
A coroner's office news release said Humberto Martinez-Rios died at the scene of the 5:12 a.m. crash 0.3 miles west of Mayer Avenue. He was wearing a seat belt.
California Highway Patrol officers said Martinez-Rios was driving a Toyota Corolla east on Highway 58 about 60 mph. Elias Torres, 34, was driving a Honda Accord west on the highway at about the same speed.
Martinez-Rios allowed his car to drift to the right, where it entered the dirt shoulder, officers said. He tried to correct by turning to the left and veered into westbound traffic, striking Torres' car head-on.
Both vehicles came to rest on the north shoulder of Highway 58, with the Corolla facing east and the Accord overturned on its left side.
