Cal State Bakersfield suffered a tough loss to Kansas City in Western Athletic Conference volleyball play Saturday night in the Icardo Center.
The Kangaroos opened the match with a 25-19 victory before the Roadrunners tied it up with a 25-22 win in set two. Kansas City took set three 25-23 before the 'Runners hit .382 in set four to earn a 25-17 victory.
UMKC (9-7, 3-1 WAC) opened the fifth set by outscoring CSUB 8-5. After the media timeout, Bakersfield (9-9, 2-3) responded with a 4-1 mini run to tie it at nine. With the score tied at 11, Kansas City scored the next two points on a pair of 'Runner attack errors. Kills by Shayna Guitare and Kelsee Sawyer tied it up at 13.
Sawyer's next offensive attempt was blocked by Melissa Hartsel and Jessica Hendin, but Sawyer responded with a kill on the next Bakersfield offensive attack to tie the set for the sixth time. A Kansas City hitting error put the Roadrunners by one, but an unforced Roadrunner error tied it 15-15. Saywer's career high 25th kill returned the lead for what proved to be the final time at 16-15.
A CSUB service error tied the match for the eighth time in the set (16-16). Sawyer hit the ball out of pounds on her 80th attempt of the night for a 17-16 Kangaroos' lead.
JC cross country
VENTURA -- Jessica Campbell ran a 22:38 on the 5K course to help the Bakersfield College women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish in the Western State Conference Preview meet at Arroyo Verde Park.
Campbell's time was good enough for 14th. Esthefani Perez (24th, 23:18), Orieth Rodriguez (28th, 23:27), Leah Theroux (30th, 23:35) and Moriah Millwee (33rd, 23:52) also had strong finishes for the Renegades.
The BC men's team finished ninth, with Juan Calderon placing 25th, completing the 4-miles course in 23:51.
Aldo Gil (28th, 24:00), Roberto Davalos (44th, 24:51), David Coston (87th, 27:28) and Edgar Gonzales (90th, 27:50) round out the 'Gades' top-5.
BC will next compete 3 p.m. Friday at Santa Barbara City College.
SANTA ANA -- Dillon Harroun, 174 pounds, and 197-pounder Arko Petrosyan finished fourth in their weight classes to help Bakersfield College to a 10th-place finish at the Santa Ana Wrestling Tournament.
Jawyne Fambrough was sixth at 149 pounds and Jonathan Gomez placed eighth at 157 pounds for the Renegades.
